Biden and other Democrats had criticized the former president and his administration for not keeping its word when it came to a pledge to close Guantanamo Bay Naval Base by the end of his second term.
“For some reason, this is a good thing that has turned into a bad thing and some things haven’t changed and some things have gotten worse,” Biden told a crowd of about 300 protesters gathered outside of the White House on Thursday afternoon.
“But a lot of people have had enough about the president saying he’s going to close Guantanamo Bay, or that he’s going to get rid of the drone program,” Biden said, adding that this “has to change now that we know what he’s going to do with Guantanamo Bay.”
A majority of Democrats in Congress were silent when the former vice president delivered his speech, but three Democrats, Sen. Jeff Merkley (Ore.), Sen. Edward Kennedy Jr. (Mass.) and the House Armed Services chairman, Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.), all spoke about the tragedy that has been unfolding in Paris and urged restraint on the part of the administration.
